Every Sunday, “The Walkstars” gear up for their weekend long walk that typically ends up in a breakfast location somewhere on the West Island. So far, it probably sounds relatively normal, but here is the twist that makes them extra-special. During breakfast, they collect a half-and-half and accumulate funds that they later donate to a charity of their choice.
“Throughout the year we support causes like the West Island Palliative Care Residence or Relay for Life for the Canadian Cancer Society”, says Jackie St Laurent – the leader of the group, “However, at the holiday season we choose a special beneficiary, and this year we chose to work with the senior needs at West island Citizen Advocacy.”
The group is made up of 18 people, who meet three times a week, and share a passion for giving back to the community. But make no mistake, this group is very serious about training.
“We challenge ourselves all the time by incorporating varied training, for example, hill and speed training along with the Sunday long distance”, Jackie states. “We even participate in running events as a group of athletic speed walkers.”
The money representing the balance of the membership fund make up the donation they presented to WICA Seniors during the holidays. In collaboration with Mirella Castrechini, a Senior Liaisons Representative at WICA, they delivered cash and gifts in person to a group of seniors who are in serious need of financial support during the holiday season.
This group is not only exercising for good health, but they’re incorporating and exercising good will. Once again, the holiday season kept its promise to make the spirit shine!
