Karen’s Story :
Karen has been matched with her protégé, 97-year-old Olga, for over a year now.
They were originally matched because they shared a European background and a passion for Scrabble. Shortly after they met, Karen learned about a book Olga had written about her experience as a teenager during the war. It was published in Czech, and she had translated it into French.
“The story was so fascinating, that I suggested we look into self-publishing on Amazon,” Karen says. “So we formatted and edited and submitted it to Amazon and now it can be purchased in a digital or print copy.”
Over many nights and days, they designed the cover together and now people have been buying it all over the world. It was never about money, Olga was simply thrilled that her story was being told.
They are now translating it into English, and it will be available on Amazon in the coming months.
Karen loves to write and edit. Olga, once a school teacher, continues to value education.
“She’s a fascinating, open-minded lady who keeps up with all the latest news,” Karen explains. “I lost my mom a few years ago, and it’s amazing to find someone with so much life experience who doesn’t have to rush off to something and isn’t constantly on their phone. She treats time more preciously, and takes time to listen and notice things.”
Karen has become an Ambassador for WICA, and claims, “I think plenty of people should be matched to see how it enriches your life for both yourself and your protégé.” Olga lives down the street from Karen, but she would’ve never met her if it wasn’t for WICA’s Matching Program.
Karen made a new best friend, and it has given Olga a voice to share her story and continue to educate the world at 97 years old.
WICA has been making a positive impact on vulnerable West Islanders since 1976.
In addition to the Matching Program, we offer a semi-supervised, semi-subsidized housing program for those with mental health issues (CAP), an art program for artists with special challenges (RVA), and defense of rights/advocacy for seniors.See her video message :
